My New Orchid Shelf: IKEA VITTSJÖ Growing Space

How to turn an IKEA VITTSJÖ shelf into an indoor orchid growing space with grow lights, sensors, and gentle airflow.

By Vigi

A shelf can bring orchids together in a space where light, airflow, and organization are easier to manage. In this project, I use IKEA’s VITTSJÖ model as the starting point for a small growing area.

From assembly to growing space

The process starts by assembling the metal frame and glass shelves. Grow lights are then installed, followed by fans to improve air circulation around the plants.

The goal is not to build a perfect cabinet on day one. It is to create a practical base that can be improved over time as the orchids respond. Before adding more equipment, observe temperature, humidity, light intensity, and airflow.

A well-organized shelf makes a collection easier to care for, but watering and light still need to be adapted to each plant.

What should you monitor?

  • Light: grow lights should illuminate the plants evenly without overheating the leaves.
  • Airflow: fans help move air and prevent humidity from sitting between the plants.
  • Watering: protect the glass shelves and let each pot drain completely before returning it.
  • Organization: leave enough space to inspect and turn plants and to spot problems early.

The shelf has four levels, with glass shelves that let light pass through the unit. The first installation lit three levels; two months later the fourth level and one small fan per level were added. Sensors were also included to monitor temperature and humidity, with the goal of gentle, continuous airflow.

This kind of project works best as a gradual improvement. Start with a safe structure and observe how the environment changes; then adjust lights, fans, and spacing according to the collection’s real needs.

The idea behind the project

The shelf is not meant to be a finished greenhouse from day one. It is a base for using a home space efficiently, observing conditions, and improving the system gradually. Airflow should be gentle, and lighting should be adjusted by watching how the plants respond.
